Hyperoptic is a fibre broadband provider which is able to deliver the fastest residential download and upload speeds in the UK. You might be unfamiliar with the name, despite this major selling point, simply because you can’t just phone up and order it.
Hyperoptic’s service is available to multi-dwelling buildings, like offices and flats, and enough people need to register in order for the install to take place. As the fibre runs all the way to the building, you get genuine fibre broadband speeds, but the cabling needs to be set up and connected.
Essentially, it has to be worthwhile, and you need to be in the current catchment area. If you are, and you can get the numbers on board for the install, then you won’t find faster broadband and you could sign up for a colossal 1Gbps broadband service.
Where other providers often offer average speeds of around 36-63Mbps with their fibre, Hyperoptic customers can choose a 1Gbps fibre plan (average 900Mbps). That’s the top package, but if you’re not necessarily interested in the fastest available then you can also take a package offering 150Mbps on average, or opt for the cheapest option which delivers 30Mbps.
Getting 1Gbs download speeds is going to really make a different when you stream video, download large files or play online games. You also get unlimited usage, which is essential when you’re choosing fibre broadband and taking full advantage of it. You’d find yourself using up an allowance pretty quickly, so going for unlimited means you don’t have to think about how much you download.
The speeds will be fast and consistent because the fibre runs right to your building, so there is no reduction in speed by using a stretch of the age-old copper line, and you’re not sharing a network with huge numbers of other people in your local area.
There’s 24/7 customer support and a 12-month minimum contract. You also have the option of a phone package with inclusive calls, or you can choose fibre-only, and Hyperoptic offers no-contract deals as well.
Most fibre broadband runs on a network which connects fibre cabling to a local cabinet, and then the last stretch to your home uses the old copper line. You still get fast broadband, but the copper line slows things down, preventing optimum broadband speeds. This is known as FTTC, or fibre-to-the-cabinet.
Hyperoptic offers FTTP, or fibre-to-the-premises, and it means that you can get significantly faster broadband from your fibre service. You aren’t getting the same effect from local traffic, and you aren’t getting the slowdown from using the copper line.
Since FTTC still allows for superfast download speeds, and it is significantly cheaper and more convenient to set up than FTTP, it is still the main choice for UK fibre customers. However, if you are in a position to get fibre installed to the premises then you can experience the fastest, most fluid residential broadband available in the UK.
It is worth remembering that using Wi-Fi slows down your connection, so while a 1Gbps package will deliver extremely fast downloading, it won’t be around the maximum of 1Gbps unless you connect to the router directly via the Ethernet cable.
If you choose fibre-only then you’ll find that it’s actually more expensive than taking the option which includes a home phone service. It’s also more expensive, unsurprisingly, to take a non-contract plan.
Choosing a 12-month agreement which includes phone with FTTP broadband is likely to be the best value for money, even if you like the idea of a low-commitment deal, or you don’t feel like you need inclusive home calls.
You should also consider Hyperoptic’s installation and activation fees, although these may be waived as part of a deal for new customers.
