Founded by Romans around 2,000 years ago, York is a city renowned for its fascinating history, and it counts tourism as a key part of its economy. The architecture alone is a major attraction, with York Castle and the medieval walls that enclose the city centre both proving popular draws.
The city is proud of its history and heritage, but it also embraces the future, and this includes connecting residents and businesses to superfast broadband.
Superfast North Yorkshire is building a multimillion pound network across the county, bringing fibre broadband to homes and businesses which previously only had ADSL available. It’s a partnership which includes BT and North Yorkshire County Council, with a number of providers available because the network is open.
It is an ongoing process, so availability is not as widespread as it will be down the line, but connectivity is constantly improving, with York certainly seeing the benefits already.
Many of the postcodes in throughout the city of York are seeing download speeds of above 20Mb, and this takes into account both ADSL and fibre. For fibre alone, the average speeds are likely to be much higher.
YO1 in the city centre, for example, has fibre packages available that offer up to 38Mb or up to 76Mb. It depends on your specific street, but the availability is there, and postcodes that reach further afield, such as YO30 and YO24, also show similar packages.
Our research showed good availability for providers using the open network, with BT, TalkTalk, Plusnet, Sky and SSE all offering a fibre service. It also showed that Virgin Media’s network becomes more readily available away from the city centre.
Virgin Media offers the faster packages, with up to 152MB available in some areas, so it’s worth doing a post code check before you compare broadband in York. You may actually find a package that offers half that speed, such as one of the 76Mb services, is more than enough for your usage, and proves better value for money. Always check line rental cost as well, as this is often listed separately from the broadband price.
York is a city with great fibre connectivity, and it is improving thanks to the Superfast North Yorkshire partnership. Residents and businesses are able to get quicker broadband in locations that are central, as well as those further out, and the choice of providers means that customers benefit, with plenty of packages available.
